Bible - Bob Jones University Press

Believing that God’s Word is the basis for all truth, we strive to integrate biblical principals with academic knowledge.  The goal for our students in Bible class is to develop lifelong learners with a deep knowledge of God’s Word and a focused heart on sharing the Gospel with the world.  We teach hoping that God will develop within each student the heart to trust Him and that they will learn to apply His principles in everyday life.  Integration of biblical truth occurs throughout all curricula.  Course content contains, but is not limited to, the following: a systematic, thematic, chronological study of the Old and New Testaments, the life of Christ, prayer, the life of Paul, stories of missionaries, and developing the habit of daily Bible reading/quiet time, Bible study aids, and reinforcement of life application based on Scriptural principles.

Language Arts - Bob Jones University Press

Our Language Arts curriculum is a strong, aggressive reading/phonics program.  The BJUP Language Arts Program has been developed with the goal of sharpening thinking skills and increasing a student’s ability to read with comprehension, appreciation and discernment.  Students will read literature and express themselves in the light of Biblical truth.  They will learn how to spiritually apply those truths to life’s challenges in an age appropriate setting.   Our objective is to educate students well in traditional grammar – standard usage and mechanics of our language.  Reading, writing, and speaking skills are emphasized and encouraged to equip students to grasp God’s truth and share it with the world.  Course content throughout the K-5^th grade consists of:

•  Phonics- recognition of long vowels, short vowels, and consonants; sounding blends; phonics rules; special sounds; word recognition; recognition of sounds of English with variant spellings; syllabication; counting syllables; base words/prefixes/suffixes Lessons combine phonics, reading and listening comprehension, grammar and creative writing to equip students with skills for a lifetime. 
• Reading- read a variety of genres: family stories, information articles, poetry, Bible accounts; distinguishing reality from fantasy; oral reading; understanding the message of the author and the mood of the story; portraying a character; understand punctuation rules; recognize elements of a well written story including: setting; plot; metaphor; simile; idioms; imagery; foreshadowing; personification; repetition in poetry; rhythm; onomatopoeia; alliteration; character motives; character traits; making inferences; drawing conclusions; predicting outcomes; sequencing events; and cause and effect. Through classic literature excerpts, character-building stories, and activities that build research and literary skills, students will be prepared and strengthened for the academic demands of the future. 
• Writing- pre-cursive letter formation for A-Z; consistency in slant, letter alignment, and formation; correct punctuation and recognition of complete sentences; guided creative writing; capitalization; complete sentences, questions and exclamations; punctuation: period, exclamation mark, and question mark; synonyms; contractions are only some of the things they will focus on in this area of academics.
• Spelling- rules, double consonants, silent e, changing “y” to “i”; learning and practicing the spelling of commonly used words along with definitions through the use of spelling lists are just a beginning in a long list of spelling fun.  Students will focus on difficult spelling patterns and advanced dictionary skills as they progress through the years

Mathematics - Association of Christian Schools, International

We believe that mathematic principles are a glimpse of God’s orderliness and absolute truth.  Our ACSI mathematics curriculum is thorough in skill and concept development that includes a systematic review and extension of those concepts and skills. Biblical truths are integrated in natural ways as seen through God’s order and design of our universe.  Students are introduced to concrete, real-world problems and moved to age appropriate mastery of skills through practice exercises.  The teaching experience aims for both conceptual understanding with an appropriate balance of drill and practice and an understanding of related mathematical concepts.  Multiple resource materials are provided to enhance the teaching/learning experience of all children. Course contents consist of the following mathematical concepts at each grade level: addition; subtraction; multiplication; division; patterns; number theory; place value; fractions and decimals; measurement; time; money; geometry; algebra; probability and statistics; and technology.

Social Studies/Heritage - Bob Jones University Press

Our heritage studies program is one where students are encouraged to see history as God’s hand on the nations over time.  BJUP curriculum highlights the hand of God through History: His sovereignty over the earth, His immutable character, His omnipresence and His divine plan in history.    Using excellent hands-on activities, exciting group investigations and thorough individual coursework, the curriculum appeals to all four learning types.  Presenting from a clear, in-depth, and godly perspective the history of the Ancient and Western worlds, students will be engaged in the fascinating lessons of history. Course content consists of, but is not limited to the following: the history of the Americas from their earliest beginnings with Native American civilizations through the introduction of the Vikings and Early European settlers; western expansionism, and continues through the 21^st century.  Primary grades cover basic world history while the upper elementary curriculum provides a more in-depth study of this topic.  Incorporating map reading and geography with the continents and major oceans in early grades, the curriculum moves on into more sophisticated world geography for upper elementary students. 

Science - Bob Jones University Press

Science is understood as God’s creation and is taught from the creationist perspective. Our science is a well designed and God-based science curriculum focused on God’s awesome creation power in the study of the various sciences. Anatomy, botany, astronomy, and archaeology are only a few topics covered in the material to help root children in God’s laws of science and his divine plan for the universe He created.  A thorough study of these topics, provide material which encourages critical thinking skills for students to learn rather than simple memorization efforts.  Class investigations, hands-on experiments, and individual coursework are available helps which aid the teacher in presenting a most comprehensive and in-depth science study based on the truths of God’s word.

Electives

The following courses are designed to encourage students to use imagination and creativity as they participate in the enrichment classes.  As always, our goal is for students to see God at work in every area of learning.

• PE - offered twice a week, is designed to help the students continue to develop age appropriate physical awareness.  Students may participate in such sports as kickball, speed-away, flag football, soccer, volley ball, bowling, swimming, physical fitness, softball, strength training, , and various team building games.  All skills necessary for successful, safe participation are taught.  Every class period begins with stretching and exercises that are critical to participation and success in the Presidential Fitness Challenge.  The importance of regular exercise as it applies to the care and maintenance of our God given bodies is stressed.  Assessment is based on preparation, participation, effort and self improvement, not competition.
• Spanish - McGraw Hill’s, Viva el espanol!, Spanish grade school curriculum is appropriate for an emergent reader in Level 1.  This material, initially implemented, can be used for any age in elementary school.  Viva el espanol! contains three levels starting at an emergent reader level and continuing to approximately a 4-6^th grade reading level.  This is done in a mastery approach and each level builds upon the previous. The program uses exciting CD/audio tapes, a variety of visual aid pictures, puppets, and a series of oral and written exercises to present and reinforce lesson material.  Children will have fun with the stories and adventures as they learn to speak some basic Spanish in primary grades, increasing in their abilities as they advance. Spanish class is offered weekly to all K-5^th grade students as an enrichment class.
• Music/Band - Early musical training helps develop brain areas involved in language and reasoning.  There is a link between music and spatial intelligence, the ability to perceive the world accurately and to form mental pictures of things. Recent studies show that students who study the arts are more successful on standardized test such as the SAT and they may achieve higher grades in high school. Through music study, students can learn the value of sustained effort to achieve excellence and the concrete rewards of hard work.

  Music/Chorus is offered weekly for all grades K-5 as an enrichment class.  Students will be introduced to and become acquainted with the wonderful world of music as they learn the fundamentals of vocal and instrumental music. Students will receive instruction for playing the recorder and for reading melody and rhythm. Students have fun and learn to enjoy the music of other cultures as they learn basic drum patterns on the Tubano and Conga type drums, Latin and African instruments, rattles, bells, large Gathering drums, xylophone, and alto xylophone, all executed with singing and movement.  Part of our curriculum introduces various composers to our students as we study music from many perspectives.  Spring musicals are performed for our K-2 grades and 3 grade and up are invited to try out for our yearly musical production.

  Band is offered to all students 5^th grade and up.  Parents contract with the visiting band teacher on a semester basis.  Both beginning and advanced band is offered one day per week after school hours. 

• Art - We believe students who experience art will be more well-rounded students.  Art is an amazing and creative outlet for children of all ages.  It is helpful in developing skills that can last a lifetime and spark a child’s imagination as they create.  We believe that Art education can play a major role in a child's academic and social development.  Therefore, art is offered weekly as an enrichment class to all students K-5^th grade.
